As someone who has worked in the industry for a long time. (been working on computers since 1989) You are 100% correct with your assessment. The only thing pushing "innovation" for these manufactures. Is middle management looking for some edge for a buck. Solving problems that don't exist just so they have something to show. Now software and hardware makers they have room to grow but your are also correct that the updates and change we get are very minor from year to year. Unless your doing something super heavy a computer from 5 years ago is going to run almost everything.

I know I'm like 2 years late (and I assume someone else has already commented this), but the ASF vs ASB thing is likely a clever workaround to copying a bunch of extra data around when splitting clips. An ASF file can't simply be split into two pieces - but I suspect it almost can. The issue would be that you need to insert the header information in the middle of the file, to make two separate files. Moving the part of the file after the cut would require copying the entire file, just to move it a couple of kilobytes at most. Rather, they likely simply move parts of the file around, so the file is no longer stored linearly, and write some extra header information (and call it an ASB file). This trick makes it possible to split a clip extremely fast, no matter how large the clip is.

If you're looking for a good solvent alternative to iso then try picking up a bottle of n-heptane. It will completely ignore most inks, plastics etc, but sticker residue and the like immediately melt and come right off, leaving no mess whatsoever. You can even drench paper with pen writings on it in heptane and it evaporates right off, leaving zero discoloration. I've used it to great effect on old big box game releases to get rid of stickers and you can't even tell that anything was there unless the box was UV bleached around the sticker and it causes no damage to anything else on the box.

"We've all been there!" - that really made me choke on my energy drink :D I would still love to have a DVB card on my PC, all the while using my big ass TV as a monitor - I hate switching the TV between HDMI and TV, and I loved watching TV on my desktop PC back when I had a card like that... It couldn't do Full HD though, so a newer card it would have to be... I didn't have a big ass TV as a monitor back then though, just an old (but good) big 4:3 CRT (which I still have as one of my monitors... one of three). I use Linux and used a simple TV application named MyTV. It allowed me to switch between the channels and to record programs if I wanted, and that was all I really needed. Actually, I'm not 100% certain if MyTV had recording or if I used another application for that, but I did record some things. It also allowed me to switch quickly between the TV and other application windows, and nowadays with my multi-monitor setup it would allow me to have TV on one monitor while using other applications on other windows. I don't really want one in my laptop so much, but I might be tempted to get an external USB DVB adapter, as that I could use with the docking station for my laptop at home... I've been meaning to set up a desktop PC again for "at home" use, but most of the time I nowadays use one of my laptops as my main PC and have a docking station for it with stuff like wireless keyboard and mouse dongles connected to the dock at all times... But yeah, even though I'd be watching on the same TV screen, I'd still much rather watch TV through my PC :)

My husband works in the digital signage industry and there are a TON of different setups out there. He's set up many for military bases and as you can imagine, they don't have straight forward remote access to the outside, so lots of jumping thru hoops to update those! Also, some of the larger chains he works with will push their updated menus out to all locations or a set of locations with new items and pricing and sometimes if one of the players fails in the update, he has to remotely log in and fix it. It's a lot more complex than people realize unless you are in the industry and work in support.

Back in the 2000s, Maine, the state I live in, had MLTI (Maine Learning Technology Initiative) which provided schools all over the state with iBooks, and later the old white plastic MacBooks, then in the early 2010s, MacBook Airs. There’s a whole Wikipedia article on it, and I actually used one of those MacBook airs back in 2017 when I was in 7th grade, as they were still supported, so the school kept them until they all got destroyed by careless students whose parents couldn’t afford to repair or replace them.

I use AA and AAA (and especially C and D cell) battery dildos all the time. such a neat invention. definitely recommend for something that absolutely could be hardwired but isn't for some reason. so-called "Battery-eliminators" on the storefronts that sell them. sometimes just powering them off a USB power bank is all you want.

rework protip: Use fresh low temp lead tin solder (its fine. The 'erhmuhgurd lead' stuff is scaremongering, just dont huff the smoke, and wash your hands before you eat anything with them, and youll be fine. Its like mercury, its only dangerous if it gets inside you, and its cumulative not a 'youve been exposed now you die' thing. Manufacturers using non-leaded solder is a good thing, a great thing. Us hobbyists though.....we should be using the easy to work with leaded stuff. So use it...) and flood the solder joint with it. The juicy stuff will better spread the heat into the higher temp solder, and vastly lower its working temp. This simple trick will help keep you from nuking a joint trying to get that wave solder oven solder to clear. Thank BigClive for passing that trick down from on high ;) Seriously, Ive been soldering since I was single digits (well, playing with a solder gun (literally the craftsman big ass transformer on a pistol grip gun type irons), finally wised up embarrassingly late in life and learned cleanliness of the tip is godliness, to give a flux, and patience is a virtue. you dont suck at soldering, but your soldering tools might 😉. Also, Im a smoker, pushing 40, if leaded solder was that bad, shouldnt it have killed me by now? Im not a light smoker either.....Use the leaded stuff. Just be smart about it. Really, its fine.
